pattern buffer (noun) : A component, which is part of the transporter system, used in Star Trek that stores your molecular pattern until you are reassembled on the transporter pad – not unlike the buffer used in computer imaging of essential documentation.

The transporter was acting weird but thankfully, his molecular structure was stored in the pattern buffer, but we had better hurry and make repairs because the longer his molecules are stored the more of a chance his pattern could degrade.
