monomyth (noun) : [aka "hero's journey"] - cyclical journey undertaken by the standard mythological hero, which usu involves adventure into supernatural regions where fabulous forces are overcome, followed by the hero's triumphant return with newfound powers to help others in her or his community
One of the most universal genres of myth is the monomyth narrative, which dates back to the first unearthed fictional work, the Babylonian legend of Gilgamesh. (my sentence, but not my word) —I think Joseph Campbell, but I'm not sure, coined this term, pretty old term, been in academic lit for a while
